I was out all weekend with the besties, so I didn’t really have time to post anything up about Whitney. So here it is.
When I was 3, after dinner, I was sitting around the television with my family. A KOST commercial (it’s a an easy listening station here in Los Angeles) came on and they played a snippet of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Immediately, I was like, “What was that? Who is she? I WANT TO DO EXACTLY WHAT SHE’S DOING!” So I turned to my Uncle who was living with us at the time, told him to turn on the karaoke machine, I picked up the microphone, and I sang ALL NIGHT. It was then that I knew this was something special to me. Music was special to me. There was something about music and singing that cut to my core, even as a child. And it was from that moment that I knew I wouldn’t EVER put down a microphone for the rest of my life.
Thank you, Whitney, for sharing your talents with the world for all these years. You’ve inspired SO MANY people, especially musicians and vocalists, to try to emulate what you were. You were the epitome of excellence. I can’t ever imagine anyone having a voice like yours and I’m so thankful to you for opening my eyes to what I truly my believe my destiny is. Without you, I wouldn’t be working so hard for my dreams. You will be incredibly missed. <3
